Post computer help
So i turned my computer on this morning only to find my start menu and bar looking like windows 98?! (im using windows xp) I then try to connect to my wireless internet but to no avail. Also, some of my programs will not open, as well as I am getting a sound card error? (the computer only plays system sounds) I have never seen anything like this, and I cannot even open up norton to run a scan...just wondering if anybody has any ideas?

Do you have an older brother?

open the box and see if everything is where it's supposed to be.

Other than that... may be a new kind of virus or some exploit.

Turn it off, disconnect all externael USB devices except mouse & keyboard.

Start in back up and see what happens.

If it starts then add one USB device at a time and see what happens.

If the restore function is availiable USE IT, Once in a while my PC will get a Blue screen and reboot into 4 bit color or it will look just like win98 GUI like you said. I just run a quick restore to an earlier date and it fixes it...

Here's something that might help. It's a link to Microsoft Support for running "chkdsk". I have had some success using it when XP went strange.

If you can logon to the machine and get access to your data, I would HIGHLY recommend backing it up before running CHKDSK.

CHKDSK on Windows XP is notorious for devouring data.
